Serbia and France Already In the Semifinals Of Davis Cup

Davis Cup by BNP Paribas

Serbia secured semifinals at Aleksandar Nikolic Arena after Nenad Zimonjic and Viktor Troicki defeated Marc Lopez and Pablo Carreno Busta in the doubles clash. This has brought the crucial third point to the Serbian team, which is on his way back to the top.

The match itself was fantastic. The fans saw magnificent tennis and the battle lasted for three hours and eighteen minutes.
In the end Serbia – Spain 3-2, 4-6 7-6 6-0 4-6 6-2.

After two easy points earned during Friday, this one was pretty tough. Both matches were finished after three sets, unlike today’s marathon.

Troicki and player/coach Zimonjic had a lot of troubles in the first set, and only one break was needed for the Spaniards to claim the first set. Although the Serbs had one break chance after 39 minutes Spain was leading.

In the second set, we saw a tie-break where the home team was trailing 2-3, but they turned around the situation and won 7-4.
Then the Serbian hurricane was seen in the third set, 6-0. Zimonjic and Troicki took the serve three times from their opponents.

But eventually, in the fifth set, the Spanish team fought back and took that part of the game with 4-6.

The decisive set was open with a breakpoint from the hosts, and after that one more was seen. They calmly finished the match and set the clash with France in the semifinals.

Their next opponent eliminated Great Britain in Rouen. The French players secured the next phase after their doubles Nicolas Mahut and Julien Benneteau defeated Dominic Inglot and Jamie Murray after intense match 3-1, 7-6 5-7 7-5 7-5.
The first set was very interesting and exciting and France managed to win after tiebreak, 9-7.
The British players recovered and grabbed the second one. Interesting thing was that this was the first set won for the visiting team this weekend.

That tells a lot what is the shape of the visiting team.

After that set, the crowd was carrying the home team, and they were better, winning the next two sets closely.

The French will now have a chance to revenge for the lost finals in 2011 when they failed to win in Belgrade although they had a lead after the second day when they defeated the Serbian double.

That was the first and only Davis Cup trophy for the Serbian team.

The Italians saved a match point in Belgium, and Andreas Seppi and Simone Bolelli extended the battle for the semifinals between them and the home team. After five sets and one match point, they defeated Ruben Bemelmans and Joris De Loore 3-2, 4-6 6-3 6-4 3-6 7-6.
The match was so intense and the crowd had a chance to see the true meaning of tennis and Davis Cup today.

Despite this win, the Belgians are still much closer to the semifinals. But this is Davis Cup and everything is possible.

We saw many times that teams coming back from two points deficit.

So don’t miss tomorrow’s final games, the ones that will decide who will advance to the semifinals.
