Rodger Federer made quite a negative surprise for his fans today because he lost from 302nd tennis player on the ATP Rankings Tommy Haas.
After 3 sets and more than two hours of play, the Swiss lost in the second round of Stuttgart’s Mercedes Open with 6:2 6:7 (8:10) 4:6.
To be quite honest, the 18-time Grand Slam champion surprised our desk too, because we named him yesterday as the biggest favorite for winning the Wimbledon.
This is his first competitive match after two months of absence from the courts, and he couldn’t dream for a worse performance.
His today’s opponent is 4 years older, and this is something pretty alarming for the most successful player in the history of tennis. The competition at Wimbledon is going to be much better that Haas, with all due respect.
“I thought it was a typical grass-court match today. Rallies weren’t very long and it was decided on a serve there or a return here. If you don’t take your chances like I didn’t, leading a set and a break, you really only have yourself to blame at the end. You’ve got to acknowledge the fact that he was a bit better. It’s quite frustrating, but that’s the way it goes sometimes,” Federer said
It seems that the Swiss player isn’t disappointed a lot.
It is also, his first defeat in the opening round of any tournament played on grass and one of his worst losses in the career when we look the ranking of the opponent.
After an excellent first set, he lost the exciting tie-break in the second, after which he utterly failed to control the game and eventually Tommy Haas won.
For the German, this was the second victory in career over Rodger Federer. The previous one was back in 2012 in the finals of Halle tournament, which is also played on grass turf.
The 39-year-old veteran was surprised that he won and you can see this from his statement after the match, where he admits that the victory in this encounter, wasn’t planned.
“I’m a little bit speechless that I beat him today. It’s been awhile since I have won back-to-back matches and to do it today against Roger is obviously one of my career highlights. It’s a very special feeling,” Haas said.
A performance like this might indicate that Rodger Federer hasn’t prepared for the grass season as he planned and there is no doubt that after this match his chances of winning Wimbledon will be much lesser.
Everybody was expecting from him to flourish during this part of the year, but instead, the Swiss failed to produce any decent result already on the first test.
What he needs is a dramatic improvement of his overall game, and he has just two weeks to raise his form.
Meanwhile, Tommy Haas already fulfilled his goals in Stuttgart, and he can play without any kind of pressure in the upcoming match against Mischa Zverev.
