Everything good has to come to an end at some point. This was the situation with Manchester United’s 12-game streak in which they haven’t lost. But eventually, even that needed to finish.
Huddersfield Town, the newbies in the league, provided us with one impressive result today after they managed to beat the Red Devils.
At John Smith’s Stadium, the hosts put down a 2-1 win, in one fascinating and absorbing clash.
Aaron Moy in the 28th minute and Laurent Depoitre in 33rd were the scorers for the hosts, and Marcus Rashford brought some hope for the guests in the 78th minute.
The Red Devils were better throughout the whole match, and they had the initiative, but they just could not score.
In 79% of the time, the ball was in their possession, and they had 740 passes, 642 successful, compared to only 206 by the hosts, of which 114 were successful.
In the last 10 minutes, Manchester United was attacking and pressuring the Terriers, but nothing could change the result.
Jose Mourinho was very unhappy with his players’ performances. The Portuguese manager was criticising his team because they just didn’t provide enough effort to beat the opponent.
“I don’t even remember a friendly match where our attitude was so poor,” he said. “When I lose matches, I like to lose because the opponent was better and had more quality. But when you lose because of attitude, that is really bad. I heard Ander Herrera in his flash television interview saying the attitude and desire was poor.” and then he raised his voice.
” Oh my God, when a player says that, or a player feels that, I think they should all go to the press conference and explain why – because I cannot explain that. It concerns me because if it happened today why can’t it happen tomorrow?”
We do not witness many situations in which Mourinho praises his rivals, but after this game, that was the case. Manchester United’s manager stated, clearly, that the hosts deserved to win today.
”They played how I like. They played with everything they have, how I like, and like it has to be. They played with everything: aggression, desire, motivation, sacrifice. They played with everything, and we didn’t. So the team that deserved to win won – simple.”
Meanwhile, David Wagner was shining after the match, and the victory against Manchester United was one of the brightest moments in his career.
“This is a very proud moment. We all know how huge it is that we have beaten Man United. We have to make clear, so everyone understands what is extraordinary and what is ordinary. Today was extraordinary. I live in Huddersfield, so I know how huge this is for this town, the supporters, the chairman, the board. This is a very special moment.”
The Red Devils do not have much time to think about this defeat because they need to travel to Swansea to face the home team in the eight finals of the English Football League Cup.
Mourinho indicated that many changes will be involved in the lineup for that event, and that he wants to end this 4-game tour on the road with a victory.
