We have the first semifinal match up of the European Basketball Championship.
Slovenia and Spain are going to encounter and decide which team is going to advance to the finals.
The reigning European champions won against Germany 84:72, and Slovenia was better after an epic show down against Latvia 103:97.
Red Fury had more trouble than anybody anticipated. German team was very aggressive, and a were constantly behind the Spaniards, but the decisive part of the game was the third quarter. In that period Spain gained 11 points advantage and preserved that until the end.
The Gasol Brothers were unstoppable. Once again their experience and quality prevailed, and in the critical moments, they took the responsibility and quickly overcome any challenges. Marc Gasol was the best player of the game with 28 points, 10 rebounds, 4 assists and a fantastic shooting percentage. With 6/9 for two-points and 4 of 6 for three, he was the biggest problem for the Germany. During the third quarter, Memphis Grizzlies center took matters into his own hands and single-handedly made the difference. His older brother, Pau, delivered 19 points along with 4 rebounds and Spain completely used the advantage in the paint through these two individuals.
In the losing side, as always Dennis Schroder was the best player with 27 points and 8 assists. The Atlanta Hawks point guard couldn’t do everything on his own, and therefore he had 7 turnovers. The only help came from Daniel Theiss who had 15 points and 4 rebounds.
In the second game, we saw incredible run and gun show. Slovenia was better than Latvia in probably the best game so far at this tournament. For a long time, we haven’t seen such attacking productivity, and we have to say that even if the outcome was different, it would not be unfair. The leading man among the winners was teenager Luka Doncic, with 27 points and 9 rebounds. Miami Heat superstar, Goran Dragic had a versatile performance week 27 buckets, 8 assists, and 6 rebounds.
Kristaps Porzingis had a game-high 34 points and six rebounds, but the New York Knicks Superstar was not enough for his team to win. By far he was the best individual on the court, but unfortunately, the only assistance he received was from the San Antonio forward Davis Bertans with 23 points.
Following 2009 this is going to be the first semi-finals for Slovenia, and the game is set to be this Friday. So far Spain has a much better record with 13 victories compared to only 5 by their opponents. In the recent times, the Red Fury had been much vigorous, and they have 6 wins, but Slovenia won the last meeting.
That doesn’t have to mean anything.
Basketball is an incredible sport where one possession or one single rebound can decide the final outcome.
Other two quarter-finals are scheduled for tomorrow. Italy will play against Serbia, and the other match up is going to be between Greece and Russia.
